Subway is a leading American restaurant franchise founded in August 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck. Headquartered in Milford, Connecticut, it specializes in submarine sandwiches (or “subs”) and. Subway is one of the world’s largest restaurant chains with more than 39,282 restaurants in 102 countries and territories across the globe. (History Of Subway Logo, 2013)

In 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Searching for a way to help pay for his education, a family friend suggested he open a submarine sandwich shop. The first store was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Then, they set a goal of having 32 stores opened in 10 years. Fred soon learned the basics of running a business, as well as the importance of serving a well-made, high quality product, providing excellent customer service, keeping operating costs low and finding great locations. These early lessons continue to serve as the foundation for successful SUBWAY® restaurants around the world. (The History Of Subway)

By 1974, the duo owned and operated 16 submarine sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. Realizing they would not reach their 32 store goal in time, they began franchising, launching the SUBWAY® brand into a period of remarkable growth which continues to this day. In 1965, DeLuca was preparing to attend the University of Bridgeport, where he wanted to study medicine. He had gotten a job in a hardware store to put himself through college, and was only making enough to buy lunch at fast-food restaurants like McDonald's. And because of that, his get idea to make some fast-food restaurant and with the experience his had and his interest in medicine gave him the idea of running a "fast-food venture that provided a healthier, less fattening bill of fare." From that was enough to open a sandwich shop in Bridgeport, which he named Pete's Submarines. (Daszkowski, 2015)

Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck  had 16 locations in Connecticut, and the next year they began franchising, dropped the Pete's name and became just "Subway," and introduced the white, yellow and green logo that would become the company's most familiar trait. Among the brands that Franchise Brands has helped build are Taco Del Mar and, in a nod to the original misunderstanding about "Pete's Submarines," Mama DeLuca's Pizza. (Daszkowski, 2015)
