Critical Analysis In The Humanities : Visual Arts

Critical Analysis In The Humanities : Visual Arts

Artwork Of Neville Brody

Figure 1: Free Me From Freedom by Neville Brody

Basic Properties:
Title                    : Free Me From Freedom
Artist                   : Neville Brody
Size                      :
Kind of artwork : Poster
Kinds of media   : Illustrator
Describe              : At first glance, the artist work clearly makes great use of typography, color and type as image. He seems to be very sufficient at filling up a page with type while balancing scale and weight. In “Free Me From Freedom” the words are stacked, one on top of another. The weight of the letters is uniform and the background is black. What makes this poster interesting is the use of color within the letters. In my opinion, the use of color combined with the type itself makes the poster more dynamic and aesthetically pleasing, while fulfilling its purpose. Also, the use of a black background simplifies the poster, keeping it from being too visually noisy.

Elements of Art & Principles of Design :

Line : The artist uses straight line for make the shape of font.
Shape & Form : The shape of font means that each letter has been sliced in half, which makes the
words more interesting to read and creates the effects of the letters to look like the
                              style of shape.

Value & Color: The main color is blue but also uses orange, yellow, and red colors at the top of the
design to represent the sunlight at the top of mans head. The darkness and lightness
has been varied a lot to help shade different areas of the face and to also show where
light and dark areas are. An image like this uses a light color background that
complements the main design and does not distract you from looking at the main
                            image.

Space: At a each font get a separate space for get the own style. And the artist use more space for
the title for make a focus point.

Unity & Contrast: The artist start with contrast with regards to color in this image. Normally design
the artist uses no more then four colors, but in this case Neville has managed to
make a variety of colors work well together without looking over complicated.

Emphasis: The artist has given a special emphasis to the font by the shape and the size.

Movement & Rhythm: I would describe this image as still showing little movement or rhythm.
